The intention of this blog is twofold: keep track of my MFA pursuit in journalism and chronicle my personal feelings on the journey. It is important to keep a record of your pursuits to keep you focused on the journey. But also, this blog demonstrates that the journey is the main pursuit. I accomplish writing – finish a story, a book, research for publication – but the focus shouldn’t only be on the end product. The focus needs to be on the journey. When I wrote finished my first novel in 2017, I wasn’t working and each day I woke up, had coffee, checked the news, and then dived into writing. The goal was 2000 words a day and I met it every day. After the writing was done, I rested by reading and then I invariably thought of more plot points or what I wanted to accomplish in the next installment. I took notes and then put it out of my mind until I went to bed and then laid awake thinking of my characters and what would happen to them. I realized something after the first month. The journey was the reward. I was engrossed in my own story and each day I achieved flow. Each day held its own reward for a day’s work and effort. Each day was a path towards enlightenment. Confucius was known to say that each journey begins with a first step and each day I wrote I made more steps and learned to revel in the journey I was on. I haven’t found a large audience for my books yet, but I never regret writing them and I continue to write in more diverse formats. My goal is not the end result but the remarkable journey that any endeavor takes you on. My blog is about the journey.
